Conceived by artist T. M. Mäkelä amidst the remote landscapes of Northern Finland, Jääportit is an atmospheric music project spanning nearly three decades of frostbitten sounds. Since 1997, the project has evolved from raw dungeon synth roots into a cinematic fusion of frost-rock, darkwave, and winter ambient.
As the sole composer, T. M. Mäkelä handles guitars, bass, synthesizers, and programming, layering organic textures with cold synthetic soundscapes to conjure images of desolate northern forests, twilight horizons, and dreamlike frozen realms.
With a discography spanning five full-length albums, numerous singles (including 2025’s Syksy saapuu), and live concert appearances such as Berlin in April 2026, Jääportit remains a vital voice in the ambient music scene. Originally begun in 2002 and completed in autumn 2025, “Syksy saapuu (Autumn Arrives)” carries years of seasonal echoes crystallized into sound.
Instrumental and atmospheric passages intertwine and dissolve within a dense, immersive frost-rock soundscape, capturing the stillness, transition, and melancholy of autumn.

Meaning of the name
JÄÄ ≈ ICE • PORTIT ≈ GATES
The name “Jääportit” is derived from the Finnish language, where “Jää” means “Ice” and “Portit” translates to “Gates” in English. It can also be interpreted as “The Gates of Ice” or more freely as “The Frostportals.”
This name perfectly encapsulates the essence of the frostbitten music created by Jääportit, serving as a constant source of inspiration.
The word “Jää” signifies the freezing coldness, while “Portit” conveys a sense of grandeur, representing a portal or gateway between the realms of dreams and reality, adorned with a layer of frost.
In keeping with the Finnish roots, all album and track titles are also written in Finnish. However English translations for these titles can be found on the website.
Fusion of Finnish language and its translations adds an additional layer of depth and intrigue to the music, inviting you to explore the captivating landscapes and emotions woven within each composition.
