Jääportit
Atmospheric music from Northern Finland since 1997.
Jääportit began in 1997 amid the remote landscapes of Northern Finland. Over nearly three decades the project has evolved from raw dungeon synth roots into a cinematic fusion of frost-rock, darkwave and winter ambient.
Mäkelä writes the music and handles guitars, bass, synthesizers and programming, with guest musicians joining on some releases, layering organic textures with cold synthetic soundscapes to conjure images of desolate northern forests, twilight horizons and dreamlike frozen realms.
The discography has five full-length albums and a run of singles, the latest being Syksy saapuu (2025). In April 2026 Jääportit played live in Berlin. Merchandise and tape and vinyl reissues are available in the webshop.

Syksy saapuu
(Autumn Arrives)

Originally begun in 2022 and completed in autumn 2025, “Syksy saapuu (Autumn Arrives)” carries years of seasonal echoes crystallized into sound.
Instrumental and atmospheric passages intertwine and dissolve within a dense, immersive frost-rock soundscape, capturing the stillness, transition, and melancholy of autumn.

Meaning of the name
JÄÄ ≈ ICE • PORTIT ≈ GATES

The name is Finnish. “Jää” means ice and “portit” means gates, so Jääportit reads as “The Gates of Ice”, or more freely “The Frostportals”.
The ice stands for the cold, the gates for a passage between dreams and reality, covered in frost.
All album and track titles are in Finnish. You will find English translations for them on this site.
